Many businesses across Australia have found themselves struggling with high gas and electricity bills over the past year. This has been more apparent for smaller businesses as many have struggled to keep up with the rising cost of energy.

To help businesses with this the Australian government will be delivering up to $650 in electricity bill relief for eligible small businesses, depending on what area in Australia they are based.

This is part of the Federal government’s $1.5 billion Energy Piece Relief plan that is going to aid vulnerable businesses with rising costs. The government have said that the most cost-effective way for the Government to make a difference is to give businesses direct assistance through power bills. This will aid them through the high current high-cost environment.

How will energy bill relief work for small businesses?

The amount that small businesses receive will add up to around $650 per customer. However, this could vary across the states and territories depending on energy prices in each area.

There is a certain criteria businesses will have to meet to receive this support. If you are eligible then you do not need to do anything, this will be automatically applied to bills from 1st July 2023. To meet the requirements for the discount your energy consumption must be below:

  • 40MWh in Victoria
  • 50MWh in Western Australia
  • 100MWh in ACT, NSW and Queensland
  • 150MWh in Tasmania
  • 60MWh in the Northern Territory and SA

Although most small businesses that use less than the stated consumption will be eligible there could be other reasons why you might not receive support, such as:

  • Running your small business from home or on a domestic tariff might stop you from receiving this support.
  • If your business is based in ACT or Victoria and part of an embedded network, you will not be eligible for support.

If you find that you think you are eligible for support, but you are not seeing this on your energy bills after July, then get in touch with your supplier.
