Thousands of businesses in the West Midlands are set for a sustainability makeover thanks to a brand new £24 million government-funded initiative. The program, called the Business Energy Advice Service (BEAS), is designed to help companies across the region slash their energy consumption and reduce their environmental impact.
This significant investment, announced by West Midlands Mayor Andy Street and Minister for Energy Efficiency and Green Finance Lord Callanan, marks a major step towards the West Midlands' transition to a net-zero future. The BEAS pilot scheme will provide vital support to businesses of all sizes and sectors, from energy-intensive manufacturers to local coffee shops and hairdressers.
Business energy savings
"This £24 million of government money is fantastic news," said Mayor Street. "It will allow businesses to identify ways to cut their energy usage and invest in long-term solutions that will save them money in the future." The initiative aligns with current economic pressures, aiming to protect businesses from energy market volatility while promoting sustainable practices and economic growth.
The scheme will work by offering eligible businesses that apply, a free energy audit. These businesses can then claim up to £100,000 in funding for some or all the recommended upgrades.
The West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) is leading the BEAS program in collaboration with the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero (DESNZ). This is a welcome development for the region, and many are hopeful that the BEAS will be a springboard for a greener and more resilient West Midlands economy.
